Matthew Aherne, Senior Trading Manager, Marella Cruises
“I joined TUI in 2012 as a Commercial School Leaver working in both Early and Late Trading. Immediately after finishing the scheme, I joined to support the L&D team so that I could support the next group of leavers and pass on all the things I learnt. I supported on this scheme in various roles including leading the communications and L&D teams. In 2019, I joined the placement scheme as the L&D team leader to continue my passion to support early talent, so I have spent my entire career at TUI supporting this. For me the greatest thing about working on the scheme is the pride you feel for new starters when they overcome their fears, achieve their goals and ultimately enjoyed their first year at TUI. The point of scheme is to bring in young talent, develop them so they can kick start their careers with us and hopefully return to become future leaders for our business.”
Abi Devaney, GM Supplier Management & Ancillary Revenue, Marella Cruises
“I joined TUI as a Cruise Trading Assistant on the Placement Scheme in 2014 whilst I was studying Economics and Politics at university. After finishing university, I came back to TUI on the Graduate Programme, where I got the opportunity to work on a whole host of different projects across the business from Brand Management to Flight Operations and test out what I liked best! After finishing the scheme, I was eager to continue learning how all the different parts of TUI worked together, so I joined the Business Improvement Team then, in early 2019, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to head up TUI River Cruises, TUI’s newest business, in the run up to its maiden season. During the pandemic, I moved into my current role heading up Supplier Management and Ancillary Revenue for Marella Cruises. In this role I’m back to my commercial roots, responsible for ensuring that Marella Cruises work with the right commercial partners and that those partnerships yield maximum mutual commercial benefit. Whilst it’s been a tough couple of years for travel, I’m proud of having started my career as a placement student in Marella Cruises and just five years later having joined the Cruise Board.”
Oliver Ellis, Late Trading Executive
“I joined TUI on the Placement Scheme as a Late Trading Executive and held the responsibility of trading several resorts across the Mediterranean and Canaries. Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was seconded into the Social Media team following a brief period volunteering in the role alongside my day-to-day job. I worked within the team as a Social Media Crisis Lead, managing a team of 30 members of staff each shift from around the business on all things customer contact on the TUI and First Choice social media channels. After this, I returned to university to finish the final year of my Air Transport Management Degree. Following my graduation in July 2021, I returned back into the Late Trading team where I currently work. I love working at TUI because the opportunities to travel are great, as is the product that we deal with on a day-to-day basis.”

KEVIN NELSON, HEAD OF HOLIDAY HYPERMARKET
LAURA WELBY, TECHNICAL OPERATIONS MANAGER
CRAIG DUNCAN, DIGITAL EXPERIENCE MANAGER
Jack Streeting, UX Designer
“I joined TUI in the summer of 2019 and worked as part of the Digital Experience Team at Stockton, covering UX research, design implementation, marketing and brand development. The business offers a host of opportunities for colleagues to share expertise and grow skillsets, by focusing on collaboration between various areas of the business. If I was to explain my job role to someone outside of the business, I would say I strive to find simplicity in complexity to create memorable, user friendly experiences for customers looking to book holidays online. If you’re thinking of applying for a job at TUI, I would say join us – hard work never goes unnoticed at TUI and ultimately your ability to go the extra smile will help shape your professional career going forward, like it has mine. When applying, try to think outside the box and believe in what you do. Like many others, the holiday industry is forever changing so your ability to critically think and adapt is vital. If you’re passionate, love travel and enjoy working in a collaborative, professional and fast-paced environment, TUI is for you.”
Mark Williamson, Senior Web Developer
“I joined TUI over five years ago as a Web Developer, this was shortly after I graduated from university. When I first joined, I was part of a small team focusing on the backend/API implementations, and with help from my colleagues and managers I have found myself lucky enough to progress into a senior position where I can help develop and mentor newer members of the team. My day-to-day activities can change every day, from adding new features on our websites, to investigating the best technology to use for a certain project. The goal is always the same – to try and help customers find their perfect holiday more easily and ensure they have the best experience possible. If you’re thinking of applying all I would say is to go for it as everyone at TUI goes above and beyond and will do everything they can to help support you and ensure you succeed.”
Paul Steele, Infrastructure and Database Manager
“I started here in 2013 as a Web Developer within the Web Development team working on the OTA websites. As the team expanded with more developers, my developer role became more focused on the infrastructure, our databases and also the DevOps processes that would help support the team in automating build and deployment pipelines. In late 2018 I started the role that I’m in today, taking on more responsibilities ensuring our systems are secure, meet TUI security and PCI-DSS security requirements as well as looking after the hosting budget. This has meant working closely with other areas of the wider TUI group. TUI has been supportive during my career progression; they understand the importance of learning and personal development which has allowed me gain new technical skills. Also, the travel benefits are great. I’ve been lucky enough to experience a short cruise around the Mediterranean Sea onboard Marella Explorer 2 as part of a colleague cruise which is probably one of the highlights of my time at TUI so far.”
