The time that our customers spend away on our holidays is precious. That’s why we need to understand what our customers want as well as how the world is changing so we can design, develop and deliver dream holidays. In Commercial, we are all about ensuring we have the right products on sale for our customers and that we maximise our profit by managing price, focusing on cost and controlling the availability of product. From liaising with hotel buyers, to forecasting travel trends, developing holiday brochures, and pricing holidays – it’s all in a day’s work in this area of our business.
Iona Wark, Holiday Product Lead, Ancillaries
“I started my journey on the TUI Placement Scheme, working in the Trading team within Commercial. I returned to TUI after I graduated for 18 months before I joined the Commercial Leadership Graduate Scheme. After that I gained a permanent role in the Ancillaries team and have progressed to a Senior Manager. I’ve gained so much from being on the Placement Scheme so I wanted to support it when I returned. I started off looking after the learning and development for our placements and for the last few years have managed the whole scheme. I’m so proud to lead the scheme and of everything we’ve achieved over the years, continuously ranking in the top medium sized placement schemes in the UK as well as recently one of the best development programmes. The placement scheme and early talent in general is so important to us at TUI because it bring fresh perspectives, energy and a talent pipeline for us.”
Hayley Dunsden, Content Planning Executive
“I joined TUI on the Placement Scheme where I spent the year as a Product and Planning Executive at Crystal Ski Holidays, supporting destinations such as Italy, Andorra and Bulgaria. After completing my degree, I saw an opportunity to return to the business in a different role within the Sales & Marketing team. I feel the experience and skills I gained from my placement were transferable and relevant to this position. Working in another part of the business is giving me great insight and experience, development of new skills and understanding, and opportunities to raise my profile. Not to mention it being great fun meeting new people and being part of such a dynamic team. I’d recommend applying and I would say embrace this exciting, fast-moving industry, as everyone has the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. If you want to progress, learn new skills and be part of something exciting then I’m sure you’ll find TUI is place for you!”
Oliver Ellis, Late Trading Executive
“I joined TUI on the Placement Scheme as a Late Trading Executive and held the responsibility of trading several resorts across the Mediterranean and Canaries. Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was seconded into the Social Media team following a brief period volunteering in the role alongside my day-to-day job. I worked within the team as a Social Media Crisis Lead, managing a team of 30 members of staff each shift from around the business on all things customer contact on the TUI and First Choice social media channels. After this, I returned to university to finish the final year of my Air Transport Management Degree. Following my graduation in July 2021, I returned back into the Late Trading team where I currently work. I love working at TUI because the opportunities to travel are great, as is the product that we deal with on a day-to-day basis.”
Abi Devaney, GM Supplier Management & Ancillary Revenue, Marella Cruises
“I joined TUI as a Cruise Trading Assistant on the Placement Scheme in 2014 whilst I was studying Economics and Politics at university. After finishing university, I came back to TUI on the Graduate Programme, where I got the opportunity to work on a whole host of different projects across the business from Brand Management to Flight Operations and test out what I liked best! After finishing the scheme, I was eager to continue learning how all the different parts of TUI worked together, so I joined the Business Improvement Team then, in early 2019, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to head up TUI River Cruises, TUI’s newest business, in the run up to its maiden season. During the pandemic, I moved into my current role heading up Supplier Management and Ancillary Revenue for Marella Cruises. In this role I’m back to my commercial roots, responsible for ensuring that Marella Cruises work with the right commercial partners and that those partnerships yield maximum mutual commercial benefit. Whilst it’s been a tough couple of years for travel, I’m proud of having started my career as a placement student in Marella Cruises and just five years later having joined the Cruise Board.”
