Eleni Smith, Commercial Placement Student

“I decided I wanted to do a year in industry with TUI as I’d heard from multiple students how beneficial it had been to them, not just for their degree but also for entering the workplace after university. I’ve been interested in the travel industry for years and TUI felt like an amazing fit for me. I looked at multiple companies who offered placements but TUI’s scheme really stood out. They offer really interesting opportunities throughout the year and as a company there’s a supportive culture, which was evident from my welcome day and continues to be shown as my year progresses.

Prior to working at TUI I’d spent two years studying for my BA in Business and Management. I’d taken a gap year before going to university where I worked as a holiday rep, which I did again in between my first and second year. Through this I gained valuable experience and an interest in the travel industry. This led me to look into companies within this industry whilst I was looking for my placement year. I wanted to learn more about the wider roles in travel that weren’t just customer facing.

Currently, I’m working in the Ancillaries Financial Services team. This isn’t an area I would have thought of working in prior to my year with TUI, however, I have found it a fascinating area to learn more about within an amazing team and it has broadened my knowledge of the industry. As a placement I also get the opportunity to spend half days with other departments. This has allowed me to see the wide scope of jobs available, many of which I hadn’t thought of before. We have also had the opportunity to run two projects as a placement cohort. This has broadened my knowledge of the company and has been an amazing opportunity for networking. It has been an amazing learning opportunity with placements being supported by buddies and mentors, who are more senior within the company and have been a great support to answer questions and learn from.

There are so many benefits of doing a placement year at TUI from increased awareness of an interesting industry to personal and professional development. There are multiple opportunities throughout the year to push yourself and learn valuable skills. Following my year at TUI I will return to my university to finish my degree, having learned so much from my year that I will be applying to my studies.
My advice for future placement students is to take as many opportunities as you can. There are so many opportunities to learn and gain experience. Taking the chance to find out about other areas of the company has been invaluable. There are so many chances for some amazing experiences within the year so believe in your own ability and most importantly enjoy it!”
